Case Study Reanna Capewell had no interest in learning when she was at school, and says that having a second chance has been great. She studied towards the OCR Level 1 Certificate In Adult Literacy at the Stanley Children's Centre, and says that passing it was a fantastic achievement. She has now progressed onto the Level 2 course. Reanna says that returning to study has developed her confidence and given her a chance to meet other mums who also wanted to return to learning. She has been studying a combined Aromatherapy and English course, which she says has been a fun way to learn. After spending 10 years working as a cleaner he decided to take a literacy and numeracy course. Since starting learning just over a year ago, he has made phenomenal progress, completing basic skills and IT courses and an NVQ in customer service. Chris has transformed his life completely on the back of his new qualifications, he has changed careers and is now working as a civil servant, a job that he could only have dreamed of. " Also, knowing that I don't have to rush through the courses and can study at my own pace really takes the pressure off. I try to complete one module a week, but I can do more one week and less the next, depending on my other commitments." Case Study Stars from the Wakefield Wildcats took part in training to brush up on their skills. The three day bespoke training session for the first team squad and coaching staff, was put on following a request from Wildcats' head coach, John Kear, who felt it was important for modern day sports stars to have the right verbal and written communication skills. Through a series of interactive activities, including mock TV interviews and press conferences, players were put through their paces and eventually achieved a recognised Level 2 qualification. " Our aim is to reach out to as many adults as possible. In an area such as Wakefield, where 63% of adults are not qualified to Level 2, the Wildcats players are really leading the way. We hope lots of fans follow their example in improving their communication and numeracy skills."
