Our students don't get lost in large groups, they have tutor guidance and support for the whole of their time with us, and they often have the opportunity to work to live briefs, so graduate already equipped to go straight into the workplace. All in all, we're confident we provide a better Higher Education experience than many universities, at a fraction of the cost! Widening Participation We welcome students of all ages, from diverse backgrounds and also aim to provide access to Higher Education for those who may not have formal entry requirements, but demonstrate both the ability and motivation to succeed. Our portfolio of Higher Education courses is broad ranging and all our programmes, be they degrees, diplomas, certificates or professional qualifications, are of a quality equal to those offered at university. These courses will provide you with the knowledge necessary for you to follow your chosen career, whilst at the same time developing the practical and personal skills which will give you the edge in the world of employment. Higher Education - not higher prices Students at universities and colleges across the country, including those close by, will find themselves paying fees of up to £ 3225 per year - but fees at Wakefield College for 2009 entry are set at £ 1539 ( all fees quoted are per year), adding strength to the argument for Wakefield students to study for a Higher Education qualification at their local College. Case Study: Jan- Marie Knights Foundation Degree in Glass Manufacturing Management " I saw this course as a great opportunity to develop myself later in my career and I appreciated that new qualifications could open up more opportunities to me. " I was hesitant about returning to education. I had been out of the classroom for thirty years and I wondered how I would cope with the pressure of studying while working, but I have been pleasantly surprised at just how rewarding and enjoyable the experience has been. " The course was flexible and responsive to my needs. The tutors were always available which really helped - they were there every step of the way. It has increased my self confidence and self esteem. " I plan to top up to a BA as my passion for learning has been re- invigorated. The course has been life enriching for me, through the camaraderie that I found and the various activities I undertook. " I have got so much out of this course, so my advice would be that you should never be put off by education. If you have the chance - just go for it." Some Higher Education courses at a glance... 10 www. wakefield. ac. uk Case Study W E Rawsons, the leading manufacturers and suppliers of fibre based products which are distributed world wide decided to put all LGV drivers on a training programme which included SAFED and NVQ Driving Goods Vehicles. Barry Crosswaite, Transport and Distribution Manager, commented: " I was most impressed with the results of both SAFED and the NVQ programmes. All drivers will now receive an annual refresher as part of their continual development. I will also be looking at further NVQ's. SAFED and NVQ's go together from a company point of view. They make the drivers better, happier, and less stressed". Wakefield College delivers many courses that are an essential requisite for working in a particular field or job. " The NVQ has got us thinking about how the customers feel and has given us an insight into how we can help them. " Our assessor is fabulous- if I've ever struggled, my assessor is always on the end of a phone or an e- mail to give advice and is so supportive." Louise Coldwell, Customer Services Manager, added: " Wakefield College actually work with our staff on their units and it stretches them and makes them learn new skills which benefits us as a team and as a business - no time is lost from having staff away from work. It's quality based, fresh approach, and is focused around our needs, against other training providers who simply come in and rubber stamp things which doesn't help us as a business. " The team has improved enormously as we have evolved, and this has been with the help of the training from Wakefield College. The training and learning has helped us to see things from our customers point of view."
