International Prospectus 2010 Wakefield College 07 The International Centre A ' Special Welcome Programme' Our welcome programme helps you settle into your new life, make friends, register with a doctor, open a bank account, get your travel pass and much much more. We ask you to arrive at College a few days before your course begins so that you can take part in the orientation programme. If you arrive after this date we will do our best to give you an individual introduction to the College. Wakefield College is a friendly College where there are students of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities who are involved in a variety of activities together throughout the academic year. Our dedicated international team is with you every step of the way, from helping you to choose the most suitable course, handle your course application, provide advice to assist in your visa application, arrange your accommodation, meet you at the airport on your first arrival and support you throughout your studies. Meet the team Dawn Carter Head of International Centre Heather Baxendale International Administrator Lesley Rowe International Centre Coordinator Student Life The cost of living is significantly lower in the north of England, which together with our very competitive tuition fees, provides international students with the chance to gain an excellent education at a very affordable price. In their free time students can take advantage of the College sports and leisure facilities, or organise a trip to a nearby city using the College travel agency. The International Centre also organises social activities to help students make new friends. 08 Wakefield College International Prospectus 2010 Accommodation options Host Families We place all students who are under 18 with reliable, friendly host families, ensuring that they are comfortable and secure. Living with a host family is a good way to learn about British culture and settle into life at Wakefield College happily. Students pay £ 100 per week* and for this they receive a study bedroom, breakfast and evening meals during the week and all meals at weekends. Heating and laundry are included. This represents excellent value for students. * 2009- 10 Rented Student Houses and Flats The International Centre can provide information about local houses and flats available to rent. Marion Walker Marion is one of many host families for our students. Marion provides a study bedroom and meals and students quickly become part of their family. Marion has found it a very worthwhile experience and has enjoyed learning about the different cultures our students come from. Students love this opportunity to learn about English culture and practise English language at home. Host families - feedback They welcome students into their homes, treat them as part of the family, introduce them to the way of life in England and support them in their studies, many even attending information evenings for parents in college. Our recent survey about their experiences in hosting international students showed that: 100% of the host families agreed that the International Centre Staff are always on hand to support the families and respond quickly to questions and problems 100% were pleased with the information provided about " their student" before arrival so that they could prepare and welcome them 90% have enjoyed finding out about the culture of another country. 90% have enjoyed the experience so much they would recommend friends to become hosts.
