Research Degree Programmes www. northumbria. ac. uk

Welcome Postgraduate student study is a vitally important part of our research landscape. With over 400 students studying for research degrees ( MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate) across the University, we have a vibrant community of postgraduate researchers, supported by excellent new facilities in the Graduate School, which oversees all aspects of postgraduate research programmes and provides resources to support them. The University has invested significantly to provide support for postgraduate study, with dedicated high-quality spaces and facilities available throughout the University. Financial support for postgraduate study comes from a number of sources, including Northumbria's own research scholarships, scholarships funded by the Research Councils, and scholarships funded by external sponsors. Details of current opportunities can be found on the website ( www. northumbria. ac. uk/ researchstudentships). Opportunities for study are available in all parts of the University, with supervision provided by acknowledged experts. In the recent Research Assessment Exercise ( RAE), more than two thirds of our research was judged to be internationally recognised, with almost half of this falling into the excellent or outstanding categories. Not content with this success, we are investing, to build and strengthen our research base, through the appointment of almost 100 new, research active, academic staff. Associated with these staff will be an exciting number of new opportunities for postgraduate study. In this brochure we have brought together the opportunities for postgraduate research ( PGR) study, across the University, with descriptions of the research projects available, case studies and student profiles. I do hope you will find something here that whets your appetite for study at Northumbria and would be delighted if you were to contact us to discuss the possibilities. Thank you for your interest in studying at Northumbria University. Professor Peter Strike Deputy Vice- Chancellor ( Research and Innovation) Northumbria University is one of the largest and most successful of the modern universities in the UK.
