www. northumbria. ac. uk19 Professional Doctorates The School also offers two Professional Doctorates. Professional Doctorate in Public Administration ( DPA) The DPA is an innovative qualification designed for practitioners and managers operating at a senior level to undertake continuing professional development and postgraduate study at doctoral level. It is an ideal choice for international senior managers, service providers, project workers in the public and voluntary sectors and those working in partner organisations involved in the delivery of public services. Studying for a DPA enables students to focus on the management and implementation of public policy within the institutional framework of the modern state. Designed to enable systematic engagement in original research, the DPA enhances knowledge and professional practice through a critical understanding of the administration of public services within national, European and global contexts. It allows the integration of academic and professional knowledge, leading to new understandings of the way in which professional practice can be improved in the rapidly changing public sector. Professional Doctorate in Arts This new programme of study for experienced and innovative practitioners working in the arts, media and cultural sectors offers an opportunity to gain a doctorate grounded in professional practice in: Arts Conservation; Collections and Curating Studies; or Cultural Management. It is the ideal choice for experienced professionals working as collections managers, policy- makers and curators ( museum, archive, art gallery, heritage); cultural managers, arts and exhibition organisers; conservation managers, researchers and practitioners of art, architecture, design and heritage; and media managers, policy-makers, researchers and producers. Studying for a Doctorate in Arts enables students to deepen knowledge within their professions and to develop and consolidate insights gained through prior experience or study. Dr Clark Lawlor PhD Supervisor profile " PhD students are remarkably well provided for at Northumbria: as well as the usual library facilities ( online and off) they have their own workspace, computer and, most importantly, high- quality and constant guidance from friendly and enthusiastic academics well- qualified to supervise their area of interest. There are many opportunities for involvement in joint research projects, publication, organising lecture and seminar series, conferences, visiting fellowships ( at important libraries for example) and funding awards of various kinds. The University is generous in supporting postgraduate research through travel to conferences, archives and so on. The highlight of my job is seeing the students progress and gain confidence intellectually and personally. A PhD is a voyage in so many ways! It's also a source of satisfaction to see students building a career from their PhD - we give them all the qualities and experiences they need to further themselves." 20School of the Built Environment School of the Built Environment In support of the School's philosophy of bringing professionals together, building information modelling is being generated to focus design and construction decisions; enabling architecture, engineering and construction to engage in an holistic approach to developing and managing the built environment.
