www. northumbria. ac. uk3 Research at Northumbria Types of Degree Northumbria offers several types of research degree programmes. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy ( PhD) and the Professional Doctorate degree are designed to develop research and enquiry skills to the highest level, and to advance career opportunities through enhancing academic and professional development. The PhD programme allows students to undertake an individual programme of research development that will enable original research to doctoral level in their chosen field of study, which in some areas also includes practice- led research. The Professional Doctorate degree is equivalent in standing to a PhD, but with a clear focus on developing and improving professional skills and practice, it is the logical choice for experienced professionals who wish to continue their lifelong learning. In addition Northumbria also offers the Master of Philosophy ( MPhil) degree to students. Staff or alumni may also register for a PhD by Published Work. Programme Structure Usually a research degree will involve a programme of active research typically three years full- time or five years part- time, with the support of a supervisory team ( including a specialist in the chosen research field). Students will be expected to pass through milestone targets which provide a clear structure to each programme. Example: PhD and Professional Doctorate Programmes * Applicants with relevant Masters level study and professional experience may be eligible for advanced entry - contact the appropriate School for more details. Northumbria University has an excellent record in postgraduate research across a wide range of academic disciplines. In certain key areas, these achievements have earned an international reputation.
