54General Information The Students' Union There is always something going on in the Union. Habita is our brand new, friendly and stylish coffee and cocktail bar, offering a wide range of food and drinks at student prices. With broadband, IT stations, Starbucks coffee, big screen sport, it is the place to be - morning, noon or night! Stage 2 holds the largest student- run cinema screen in the country and also plays host to some of the biggest bands on the gig circuit, including acts such as The Fratellis, Amy Winehouse, and Maximo Park in the last three years. Reds was winner of the Best Bar None Venue of the year award in 2009. In summer 2009 the main Venue in the Students' Union will be transformed into a multimillion pound entertainment conference and hospitality room. All students can register for a NUS card which offers discounts with many high street retailers. The Union also has more than 50 societies which you can join - from Drama and Film to the International Society. Don't see what you want? Then why not ask the SU to create one with 10 like- minded individuals! Then there is NU Life magazine. Produced by our dedicated editorial team it's the magazine produced by our students, for our students. The Students' Union is also here to ensure that you get the most out of your time at university. The building houses an independently run Advice and Representation Centre providing professional, confidential advice and support on a range of issues as well as weekly drop- in sessions. Since October 2007, the Students' Union have collaborated with the Graduate School to run the Postgraduate Research School Representatives system, guaranteeing that the views of research students are represented across the University and in the Students' Union - thus creating an effective channel for student feedback to enhance the research student experience. To date, the PGR Rep team have achieved a number of breakthroughs for the students that they represent, including changes in their IT and library allocations to bring them in line with academic staff; organising social events and launching School newsletters, and helping to secure one of the highest response rates nationally to the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey ( PRES). The SU also provides the opportunity to enhance employability through a number of sessions delivered by the student training team.
