Hospitality & Catering Student Profile: Shane Mc Intyre Formerly at pupil at St Aloysius High School Shane is now in second year at NRC and enjoying the Level 2 Professional Cookery course. Shane works part time as a chef and finds that the course has helped him in his workplace. At college Shane enjoys working along side different people, learning to make a variety of dishes with quality ingredients and tutors who are supportive and encouraging. When his course is completed my course Shane hopes to gain full time employment in the Catering Industry. Shane has already achieved NVQ Level 1 Professional Cookery; CIEH Food Safety Award Level 2; Safe Food Certificate; at the College. Student Profile: Jimmy McGeehan Previous School: St Josephs Course being studied at present: NVQ Level 3 Professional Cookery Full Time Any previous courses studied: None Achievements/ Relevant profile information: I am a mature student, I left school approximately nineteen years ago with no qualifications. I had a variety of jobs and a few years ago I got a job as a kitchen porter. Over the past few years I did more and more preparation and cooking , gathering the necessary experience . I heard about the full time NVQ Level 3 course and applied. I have been studying since September and can honestly say I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of the course. I am very impressed with the fact that the course is designed to fit around my working week which means I am able to gain a very beneficial vocational qualification whilst maintaining full time employment. Future Career Plans/ Progression: I plan to complete the NVQ Level 3 Professioanl Cookery and seek employment as a chef. My only regret is that I did not know about this course years ago. Student Profile: Christopher Nethery Christopher Nethery is a past pupil of North Coast Intergrated School and is studying the full time Level 3 Professional Cookery at NRC. Christopehr explains, " I am now in my third year at the NRC where firstly I achieved Level 1 NVQ Food and Drink Service, followed by NVQ Level 2 Professional Cookery, and now I have embarked on Level 3 Professional cookery. Whilst studying for my Level 1 and 2 NVQ at NRC I also achieved:- Level 2 Award in Healthy & Safety in the Workplace Level 2 Award in Healthier Food and Special diets Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering Essential Skills Level 2 in Communication Essential Skills Level 2 Application of number I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at NRC where I have had the opportunity of taking part in work placement in the catering industry organised by the college. I have also been involved in the preparation and serving food in the college canteen and presently I prepare cook and serve complex dishes for the Gourmet evenings. Presently I have secured a part time job in the industry, and can put into practice many of the skills I have been taught in college, which is most rewarding. In the future I would be very keen to progress onto University to study a Culinary Arts Degree." Junior Chefs at Northern Regional College's Ballymoney campus, Lizzie Gilmore ( 13) from Garvagh High School and Adam Oldcroft ( 13) from Coleraine Institute show off their skills watched by Sir Reg Empey, Minister for Employment and Learning at the launch of the Junior Chefs' Academy. The new initiative is set to encourage young people to pursue a career as a chef. Student Profile: Farrah Le Quesne - Level 2 Catering Farrah formerly a student of Parkhall College, Antrim attended the college one day per week to do Occupational Studies and found she thoroughly enjoyed the course. Farrah was the " CCEA Learner of the Year in Occupational Studies Hospitality in 2006" went on to complete Levels 1 and 2 in Food Preparation & Cooking. She has achieved several qualifications which include Deloitte NOCN Level 2 Certificate in Employability Skills; CIEH Level 2 Food Safety Award; Safe Food Certificate; ABC Level 2 Certificate for Pastry Chefs and Patissiers with Distinction and Level 2 certificates in Communication, Application of Number and IT. Farrah's main interest is in patisserie and she hopes to further her knowledge and skills at level 3 and beyond. Eventually Farrah wants to run a cake decorating business http:// www. nrc. ac. uk
