http:// www. nrc. ac. uk Why Engineering... Because Dreams Need Doing! Making a career choice is one of the most important decisions we make and to make this decision students need to be well informed. Why consider a career in engineering? Engineering is everywhere in our world. Engineers have an involvement in designing, creating or modifying just about everything we touch, wear, eat, see and hear in our daily lives. Everyone associates things like cars, computers, aeroplanes and bridges as being products of imaginative engineers, but so too are products such as medical implants, movie special effects, domestic appliances, roller coasters and many thousands more. The innovations made by engineers fuel economic growth, improve health, safeguard the environment and improve our overall life experience. Careers in engineering are varied and widespread in many specialist areas such as manufacturing engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials engineering, environmental engineering, aeronautical engineering, oil & gas engineering and many more. Northern Ireland has a proud and distinguished association with engineering with many companies currently involved in cutting edge development of new products and processes, playing a vital part in the world wide market. The message from industry is loud and clear- employers need an improved talent pool of newly-educated and trained engineers at all skills levels from apprentice to technician to graduate and postgraduate to meet the current and future skills needs that will drive the economy. Engineering is not an easy career route but the rewards can be substantial. A person with qualifications and experience in engineering will possess skills and knowledge which are transferrable world wide and many engineers enjoy the opportunity of an international career. This exciting engineering career journey can start here at the NRC with opportunities for apprenticeship training, technician training progressing right up to Higher National Diploma level. Engineering FACULTY 2 8 Two engineering students returned from a trip of a life time to Morehead State University, Kentucky. Nicholas Penny and Derek Tweed, both Higher Education Engineering students at NRC, spent a week meeting students and staff at the University and viewing the facilities of the Industrial Engineering Department. The visit also gave the students the chance to visit and tour Engineering companies in the area including, Summit Polymers Inc, SRG Global Inc and KDMK ( Kyosan Denso Manufacturing Kentucky). The trip extended the opportunity for the College to raise the profile of the Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing Engineering at NRC. The students were accompanied by Engineering lecturers William Watson and Paul Casson. NRC Engineering Students Go Stateside! The Manufacturing Engineering Section within the Northern Regional College was recognised as a regional centre of excellence for the manufacturing industry by government. The facility provides cutting edge technologies and training resources to support the competitiveness of the Manufacturing Engineering Industry. Such training resources offer fully computer- integrated learning and training and offer a number of advantages over conventional training methods: A multidisciplinary approach, offering training across a wide range of topics, e. g. Design to Manufacture, CAD/ CAM, CNC, Quality Control and Inspection, Process Control. A flexible approach to training to suit the requirements of industry. The benefits of such a centre include: The competitiveness of manufacturing industry will be improved as employees acquire skills in modern manufacturing techniques using computer-integrated systems. The Centre provides a focal point for innovation in key sectors such as manufacturing engineering. The Centre has improved qualification rates contributing to the improvement of skills needs within the province. The centre provides an industry standard facility that companies can use to inform their decisions about investment in equipment, adoption of new processes etc. Has improved provision for mainstream FE and HE students, ensuring that training is relevant to the current and future needs of employers. Provide a consultancy service for the manufacturing industry.
